3 Doors Down is a 3-person rock band from Mississippi. Originally, the band was made up of Todd Harrel, the bass guitarist, Brad Arnold, the lead vocalist and drummer, and Matt Roberts, the lead guitarist and backing vocalist. The three original members were raised in the small town of Escatawpa. 3 Doors Down found its way back in 1994. The band’s story recounts a story of friendship between the three members, and the band demonstrates the importance of friendship and having faith in eachother. According to the band, they came up with the name of their band after seeing a broken “doors down” sign in Alabama. Since the band was a trio, they added the three to become 3 Doors Down. The band became famous starting in the 2000s. The band released several singles including “Kryptonite” and “Here Without You.” It was through “Kryptonite” that 3 Doors Down rose to international fame. “Kryptonite” was such a hit, making it to the top three on the Hot 100 Billboard list. This marked such remarkable progress that the band soon signed with Republic Records, and soon after, they released their first album, The Better Life (2000).

The Better Life was the 11th best-selling album of 2000. After this success, 3 Doors Down continued to release hit after hit, such as “Loser” (2001), which made it to number 2 on the Billboard. In 2002, the band released their second album, Away from the Sun. The significant thing about their songs and why they are such a hit is that the songs are able to relate to each person on a personal level. The stories in their songs bring out the emotion, and they can resonate with any audience. Their songs are also authentic and original, which makes their music likable. What stands out in their songs is their lyrics, which can tap into the listener’s emotion. An example is in their song “Still Alive”:

If you could see me on the other side,

you might find me fighting for my life,

But I’m still alive.

3 Doors Down

The lyrics are the chorus of the song, and once a person hears it, they can relate since everyone has faced a challenging experience at least once in their life where they struggled to keep going on with life. The sounds also connect with the lyrics enabling them to come up with brilliant masterpieces. Through their rock music, the band has been able to inspire other artists in society. At the same time, they have also influenced many lives out there, especially the young generation, as they relate with their experiences.

The band continued to draw large crowds at their shows, and they extended to other places. In addition, the band came up with a foundation. The Better Life Foundation is aimed at helping the community. This inspired the band to visit SUNY Geneseo while still in the prime of their popularity. The band visited primarily through The Better Life Foundation, where they sought to promote mental health awareness among college students. They offered to support those experiencing mental health issues by providing support groups and support centers. After which, the band performed a live concert in the college featuring their first single, “Kryptonite,” and the crowd went wild. 3 Doors Down also performed some of the other songs from their first album, The Better Life, amounting to an all-around experience for students. SUNY Geneseo students were able to learn and be entertained by one of the hottest bands of the early 2000s.
